Health Screenings

Following evidence-based recommendations for health screening helps find disease at an early and more treatable stage.  This bar chart shows that less than half of those surveyed are following the recommendations for screening for colon cancer.  It also shows that, on Hawaii Island. According to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (2002-2007) more are following the recommendations in Hilo than on the rest of the island.  There is significant opportunity to improve on the entire island and in the State. See U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) for recommended screening at www.ahrq.gov/clinic/cps3dix.htm).

Colon Cancer

Local data confirms the gap in screening for colon cancer.  While USPSTF recommends screening all males 50 years and older for colon cancer,  local self-reported data from How’s Your Health, North Hawaii on-line survey revealed that of the 92 surveyed, approximately ¾  had received cholesterol screening, while less then ½ had received colon cancer screening.

Mammogram

On the other hand, according to the Hawaii State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey,  the data reflects that about 90% of women 40 years and older in both the County and State are getting mammogram screenings.

Early detection through effective screening with mammogram's and self-exams helps detect breast cancer at earlier stages which are more treatable.
